A blackout during a CEO's keynote speech, a product launch, or a headline DJ set doesn't just halt the event; it damages brand reputation and ruins the attendee experience.

The Three Tiers of Event Power Redundancy

Many AV companies simply hire a diesel generator, plug it in, and hope for the best. This approach is highly vulnerable to generator failure, voltage spikes, and the inevitable "drop" in power during the switchover. Professional power management requires a multi-tiered approach.

Tier 1: True Online UPS Systems (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

The most critical seconds during a power failure are the 10 to 30 seconds it takes for a backup generator to start and stabilize. During this window, sensitive digital equipment will instantly shut down if not protected.

  • Mixing Consoles: Digital audio consoles take up to two minutes to reboot. We place all front-of-house (FOH) and monitor consoles on heavy-duty True Online UPS systems. If the power cuts, the sound keeps running on battery without a millisecond of interruption.
  • Media Servers & Video Processing: LED screen processors and media servers are notoriously sensitive to voltage drops. A sudden shutdown can corrupt visual files. UPS backup ensures video continuity.
  • Wireless RF Racks: Microphones and in-ear monitors remain active, ensuring presenters can keep talking through the blackout while the backup power kicks in.

Never accept a quote without UPS specified. If your AV supplier relies solely on a generator, your event will experience a hard blackout and a highly embarrassing 2-minute delay while equipment reboots.

Tier 2: Synchronized Generator Farms

For large-scale outdoor festivals or major corporate AGMs hosted in temporary structures, we deploy synchronized generator farms.

Instead of relying on a single massive generator, we run two (or more) generators in parallel, synchronized through an intelligent distribution board.

  • Load Sharing: Both generators share the electrical load.
  • N+1 Redundancy: If Generator A suffers a mechanical failure or runs out of fuel, the load is instantaneously and seamlessly transferred to Generator B. The crowd never knows anything happened.

Tier 3: Clean, Regulated Power Distribution

Generators are notorious for delivering "dirty" power—fluctuating voltages that can introduce audible hums into the PA system or physically destroy delicate lighting fixtures.

We utilize advanced power distribution units (PDUs) with built-in Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR). This ensures that every amplifier, moving head light, and LED panel receives a constant, clean 230V, protecting the integrity of the show and preventing catastrophic equipment failure.

Managing Venues with In-House Generators

Even if your venue has a massive backup generator, risks remain. Venue generators often experience a 30-to-60-second delay before engaging. During this time, the venue plunges into darkness.

When working in venues, we separate our critical production power from the venue's grid where possible, or we implement heavy UPS buffering on all essential production circuits. We also conduct rigorous load-testing during the setup phase, physically simulating a grid failure to ensure the venue's switchover triggers correctly before the doors open.
