The R5,000 Sound Quote
Small budget. Same audience. Same reputation on the line.
Nobody loses sleep over a R5,000 sound quote. That is precisely the problem.
When a corporate event crosses R500,000, procurement wakes up. Suppliers get vetted, compliance documents get checked, technical riders get reviewed. But between R5,000 and R50,000, the process quietly switches off — and this is exactly where most corporate brand damage begins.
Risk #1: The Price Bracket Where Due Diligence Stops
This price bracket is home turf for the guy with a speaker and a bakkie. Hybrid cables, a high-distortion mixer, and zero engineering discipline — racing to the bottom to win the job.
On a procurement spreadsheet, his quote looks fantastic. But the spreadsheet won't be standing next to your CEO when the microphone squeals in front of 200 guests, or when the wireless drops out halfway through the year-end address.
The cost of failure doesn't scale down with the guest count. A feedback howl embarrasses your executive just as badly in front of 80 people as it does in front of 800.
Risk #2: Delegated, Then Forgotten
Smaller AV quotes are usually handed to logistics, an office administrator, or a junior team member with no technical background. To them, "sort out the sound" is another item on a long to-do list. Get three quotes, pick the cheapest, tick the box.
That checkbox is where the risk door swings wide open. The person booking the supplier is rarely the person who will be standing at the lectern.
If you are that person, here are four questions that separate engineers from operators:
- What is your backup if the wireless microphone fails? (The right answer: a wired microphone already patched and live on the desk.)
- What cable do you use? (Brand names like Sommer, Klotz and Neutrik are a good sign. "Normal cable" is not.)
- Who exactly will be on site, and what will they be wearing?
- How many speakers, and where will they stand? (Two loud boxes at the front is a red flag for anything over 50 guests — see why distributed speakers win.)
Risk #3: Unit Economics Guarantee Tired Gear
At low price points, the maths is brutal. A one-person operator cannot justify reference-grade cabling for a 50-person function, so you get worn cables, crackling connectors and mixers that have survived a decade of rough handling. Large rental houses aren't immune either — small jobs often receive the leftovers from touring stock.
The weakest component in the signal chain decides whether your event works. One intermittent connector is all it takes.
Why We Built the Precision Series
We believe flawless execution is cheaper than brand damage. So we built a dedicated range of small and intimate event sound packages that carry the same discipline we bring to major stages:
- Wharfedale Typhon AX12 BT loudspeakers, deployed in distributed pairs for even coverage — following the physics of the inverse square law.
- Sommer Stage 22 and Klotz MY206 cable with genuine Neutrik connectors. No hybrids, no mystery adapters.
- Soundcraft Signature 10 or Behringer XR18 mixing, gain-staged properly by a trained engineer.
- Shure BLX wireless with a wired Shure SM58 live on the desk as a redundant backup. Read more about Shure's wireless tiers.
- Uniformed, trained crew who represent your business with the same professionalism you expect from your own team.
Packages are fully staffed and start from R3,440 for up to 50 guests, scaling to 250 guests.
Invest in certainty, not disaster management. Compare the Precision Series packages and choose the right engineering for your room.
